Humpback Whale Watching and Restaurants in Ricon de Guayabitos
My vacations have been to Nayarit, Mexico for a long time, chiefly due to the great surfing. I am no great surfer but I love to catch the breakers and the coastline along Banderas Bay is phenomenal. My friends and I go to Mexico a couple times a year for the great waves and beaches and, well, just to relax and chill. During some trips, I saw groups heading out for humpback whale watching in Sayulita, and while the people on the tours always looked elated on their return trip, I have never been a touristy person, and my friends sure were not either. We just surfed all day and then had a nice meal and drinks at a local cantina.

On my most recent vacation to Sayulita I went solo. My normal partners could not make it and it was kind of a spontaneous trip for me anyway. I was having some heavily stressful days and I always answer those with a cheap trip to Mexico. I had executed my traditional routine of surfing, eating and drinking for two days and frankly, I was getting a bit bored in the evenings with no friends around. On the third night I was in Mexico, I got myself a little lubricated and began to talk to a group of people who were going out of Sayulita for a humpback whale watching cruise. Perhaps it was the booze, but I was unexpectedly rather interested in witnessing these massive creatures close up. My new friends made it sound like a fantastic encounter, and I was becoming aware that owing to my love of surfing and the water, I had fostered an affinity for the living things in it.

Of course I was hungover in the morning and I was kind of queasy but my new friends insisted on hauling me off to Sayulita for the humpback whale watching trip. I am not one for crowds – one of the reasons I had stayed off the tours is that usually there are loads of tourists. Luckily, this was a private cruise and there were maybe ten of us. Nothing happened for like an hour and then only a couple hundred feet away a massive humpback whale burst out from the ocean, towered over the surface, spewed a jet of water to take a breath and collapsed back into the sea. I saw dolphins and even a group of killer whales. It was likely the most wonderful experience of my life and now every vacation I go on to Mexico includes a whale watching tour.
